Ellen was born in September 1838 in WestLeigh and her christening took place on August 12th, 1838 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  Ellen's father was Holt Mather and her mother was Alice Vickers.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Holt. She had a brother and six sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Rosannah, Lavinia, Jane, Alice and Maria.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
