James' father was John Vickers (Mather) and his mother was Elizabeth Marsh. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Vickers and Mary Mather. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Ellis, Thomas, John, Thomas, William, Alice, Mary, Jane, Ann and Ellen. He was the oldest of the eleven children.
