Sarah was born in 1835 in Hindley.1  Sarah's father was William Mather and her mother was Martha Barlow. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Thomas, William, John, Mary, Elizabeth and Jane.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
