Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Beswick.  His paternal grandparents were Holt Mather and Alice Vickers. He had a brother and five sisters, named John, Sevina, Ann, Jane, Alice and Louisa.  He was the youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named Robert.  He died at 6 months old in June 1867 in Halliwell.¹
