James' father was James Mather and his mother was Isobel (Elizabeth) Wilkinson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Dawson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, John, James, Bould, Mary and Nancy.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in April 1787 in Turton.  He was buried on April 18th, 1787 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²
