James's first wife Betty was born 1769 (known from burial), and was only 16 when she had her first child, and married. James is likely to be older, certainly not younger. There is only one James also buried at St. Peters born in the 1760s, so this is likely to be him.

James is probably the son of John and Mary Mather from Whitefields. The age matches, its the nearest parish (other than Bolton), and the first two children (Mary and John) are named after his parents.
In 1780 when the first John was baptised, they lived at Little Bolton, but Great Bolton in 1782 when he was buried.
