James Mather

James was born in 1757 in Turton and his baptism took place on May 1st, 1757 in Prestwich.¹²

- James's first wife Betty was born 1769 (known from burial), and was only 16 when she had her first child, and married. James is likely to be older, certainly not younger. There is only one James also buried at St. Peters born in the 1760s, so this is likely to be him.

James' father was John Mather and his mother was Mary Dawson. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Joanna Hilton. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Richard, Ann and Mary. He was the third oldest of the six known children. He died at the age of 37 in March 1794 in Walmsley. His burial was on March 7th, 1794 in Turton.³¹
