Thomas was born in 1751 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on July 25th, 1751 in Prestwich.1  Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Mary Dawson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Joanna Hilton. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Richard, Ann and Mary.  He was the oldest of the six known children.
