John was born in 1780 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on September 18th, 1780 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Isobel (Elizabeth) Wilkinson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Dawson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, James, James, Bould, Mary and Nancy.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 2 in April 1782 in Bolton.  He was buried on April 27th, 1782 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
