John was born in July 1783 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on July 27th, 1783 at Turton Chapel.1  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Isobel (Elizabeth) Wilkinson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Dawson. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, James, James, Bould, Mary and Nancy.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
