Thomas was born in 1829 in Bolton and his baptism took place on April 22nd, 1829 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Thomas' father was John Marsh and his mother was Margaret Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Betty Knowles. He had a sister named Mary. He had an adopted brother named William.
