James was born in 1763 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on December 11th, 1763 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  James' father was Elias Mather and his mother was Margaret Whittle. He had a brother named John.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 56 on April 25th, 1819 in Bolton.  His burial was on April 25th, 1819 at St. Peter's (Bolton).3 4
