This is strange for a minor, and doesnt state which Catherine (Peter and Charles also had a Catherine) so perhaps there is another Catherine, over 21. 1840 - 1902 Frances Hopley 62 62 25 Aug 1862, Edward Brereton (25) son of Thomas married Frances Hopley (25) daughter of George Hopley at Malpas, Cheshire. 1802 - 1808 George Hopley 5 5 1800 - 1891 Catherine Caldecott 91 91 In 1855, Catherine was listed in Slater's Trade Directory as Living in Church Street, Malpas, a Milliner & Dress Maker. 1837 George Hopley George was 4 in 1841, living with his parents in Broxton. 1835 - ~1835 George Hopley 1835 - 1835 Emma Hopley 1833 Harriett Hopley In 1851, Mary Ann (20) and Harriett Hopley (17) were servants for Robert and Mary Brassey at Bunbury.

In 1891, Harriet was a servant (Housekeeper) for George Ore (57, Single, Farmer) at Duckington.

In 1901, Jane Sumner (Harriett's Niece) was visiting with two of her children.

In 1911, Harriett Hopley, single woman, Aunt, was with Joseph and Jane Sumner at Cacca Dutton.
1830 Mary Ann Hopley In 1851, Mary Ann (20) and Harriett Hopley (17) were servants for Robert and Mary Brassey at Bunbury. 1825 - 1829 Anne Hopley 4 4 1829 Sarah Hopley In 1849, Sarah married John Shenton from Egerton, where they lived for over 30 years. 1722 - 1798 Thomas Hopley 76 76 Appart from 4 x £5 going to grandchildren and a shilling each to his daughters, Thomas inherited his father's estate, now of Church Shocklach.

When Thomas died, he left Robert £50, Peter £20, Charles £100, William, James and Samuel his livestock and the other children an insult of 1s.
1726 - 1810 Catherine Lewis 84 84 When Thomas died, he left Catherine £200.

Catherine also left a Will passing probate on 18 Aug 1810 which is worth reading.  Catherine Hopley widower of Shocklach left William, Samuel and James (the 3 brother farmers) £40 to share.  Robert, Charles and John each got £10.  Peter died in 1798, so his three daughters got £5 each when they reached 21.  Son Thomas was left out of the Will. Daughter Mary Devis recieved £10 but not the other daughters.

Catherine bequethed "to my Granddaughter Catherine Hopley The Sum of Ten Pounds".  This is strange for a minor, and doesnt state which Catherine (John, Peter and Charles all had Catherines) so perhaps there is another, aged over 21 in 1810.
1765 - 1844 Samuel Hopley 78 78 Thomas's three sons William, James and Samuel probably worked together on the farm at Church Shochlach. Their father left them all his stock of cattle and horses and implements of husbandery and household goods.

In 1837, Samuel and James Hopley were occupiers of land at Church Shoicklach.

In his will of 1844 Samuel left everything to his wife Sarah.
1767 - 1798 Peter Hopley 31 31 According to Thomas's Will, Peter moved to Salford, Manchester.  He was left £20.

Peter died before 1840 as not mentioned in brother William's Will. He was referenced in Catherine's Will as deceased in 1810, with three daughters.
1762 Elizabeth Hopley Elizabeth, wife of William Bradshaw of Penley, Flintshire was left 1s by her father. 1770 - 1840 Charles Hopley 70 70 Charles of Shochlach Oviat was left £100 (the most of any of his brothers) by his father Thomas, so presumably favoured being the youngest at only 22 when his father died.  His mother Catherine also left him £10, which was changed to £20 in the Will - suspect !

Charles and William died about the same time and were buried 2 days apart.
1750 - 1826 Anne Hopley 76 76 Eldest daughter Ann married George Green. She was left 1s by her father and nothing by her mother.  However, her youngest son GHeorge Green inherited £5 from Catherine in 1810.

Ann was only 17 when she married George, who was 28, but then Ann's parants were also young when they married.
1759 - 1843 James Hopley 84 84 In Sep 1806, James Hopley of Edge, was listed as servant and gamekeeper for Ambrose Brooke Esq. for the manor of Hampton, Malpas (Chester Courant 3/10/1806).

Thomas's three sons William, James and Samuel probably worked together on the farm at Church Shochlach. Their father left them all his stock of cattle and horses and implements of husbandery and household goods.

In 1837, Samuel and James Hopley were occupiers of land at Church Shoicklack. James was at Lane End.

James's Will of 4 Oct 1839 passed probate in 1844
1752 Mary Hopley Thomas's second daughter was Mary Davies of Manchester. She was left 1s by her father and nothing by her mother.

Mary's daughter Elizabeth of Church Shochlach was left £10.  Later, in 1810 her mother Catherine Hopley left her £10.
1757 Thomas Hopley In April 1776, Thomas Hopley of Shocklach, aged 19 and upwards married Ann Pritchard, also 19 and upwards with the consent of both parents, Thomas Hopley and Daniel Pritchard by license.

According to Thomas Hopley's Will, Thomas moved to Worthenbury, Flintshire.  He was left 1s.  He was already a landowner (Yeoman) at the age on 19.  When his motheer Catherine died in 1810, Thomas was left out of her Will.

Soon after Thomas and Ann were married, son William was born. That is why they married at the age of 19.

Ann's baptism of 1792 shows their abode as "The Wern", Worthenbury

1753 - 1840 William Hopley 87 87 Thomas's three sons William, James and Samuel probably worked together on the farm at Church Shocklach. Their father left them all his stock of cattle and horses and implements of husbandry and household goods.

William retired in 1821, selling his farming stock, implements, dairy and brewing vessels by auction (see image).

Charles and William died about the same time and were buried 2 days apart at Shocklach. William had no will (on record).
1755 - 1832 John Hopley 76 76 John of Church Shocklach was left 1s by his father and later £10 by his mother Catherine. 1696 - 1759 William Hopley 63 63 William is recorded as a Yeoman on each of his childrens baptisms.

William's one-page Will, dated 21 Jan 1753, makes interesting reading.  It identifies his oldest son Thomas as his main heir; his daughters get a Shilling each; and his four grandchildren £5 each.

~1700 - <1759 Anne Williams 59 59 1725 Mary Hopley Mary married Edward and moved to "The Parkside".   They had a daughter Ann and son James.  Her father left £5 each to their children Ann and James in his will. 1726 - 1781 Elizabeth Hopley 55 55 According to her father's will, Elizabeth married Frances and moved to Pooton.

He left £5 each to their son John and daughter Mary
1730 - 1748 John Hopley 18 18 1791 - 1862 Ann Hopley 71 71 1719 Edward Daxon Edward's father was Thomas Daxon, who also paid the licence for his marriage.  His mother was Martha.

After they married, Edward and Mary moved to Parkside (a Farm near Holt and Farndon), in Denbyshire near the England-Wales border.

Three years after they were married, Edward Daxon paid the licence for his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hopley's marriage to Francis Fernall.

Edward and Mary had a daughter Ann of Parkside who was left £5 by her grandfather in 1759.  They also had a son James, who also got £5.
~1726 - 1784 Francis Fernall 58 58 After Frances and Elizabeth married, then moved to Poolton.

Frances and Elizabeth had a son John Farnall of Poolton, who was left £5 by his grandfather in 1795. Their daughter Mary also got £5.
1740 - 1815 George Green 75 75 Sometimes indexed as George Green of Church Shocklach.

His will indicates he was a farmer, leaving the cattle, horses, hay, corn etc to his wide Ann, together with £500.

Will of 1815 reveals sons and daughters, and much family information.
1748 John Davies John Davies of Manchester according to Thomas Hopley's Will, was left 1s. 1754 William Bradshaw William Bradshaw of Penley (referenced in Thomas Hopley's will).  1782 - 1869 Sarah Mullock 87 87 1772 - 1845 Mary Poovah 73 73 Mary Poovah may be the same as Mary Pover (sounds the same but a more common name).

James Hopley left his brother Charles and wife Mary £150, so we know he married a Mary.
1709 - 1794 John Hopley 85 85 John was a Blacksmith when he marries Sarah Harris.

Possibly father was William (if borm 1706)
~1710 - >1776 Sarah Harris 66 66 1732 - 1805 William Hopley 73 73 1741 Mary Hopley 1741 - 1774 John Harris 33 33 1770 John Hopley Harris 1772 Joseph Harris 1736 - 1753 Anne Hopley 17 17 1767 - 1770 Sarah Harris 3 3 ~1675 William Hopley William may have been married before, as in April 1685 a William Hopley of Malpas burried a son William..

01 Sep 1697 William Hopley, of Malpas, Yeoman, and Mary Moyle, of same, Spinster were married at Malpas (or St. Mary's, Chester).
1677 Mary Moyle 1706 - 1706 John Hopley 1699 Mary Hopley 1770 James Green William & James were left £160 each by their father George Green. 1773 William Green William & James were left £160 each by their father George Green. 1772 Margaret Green Thomas Davis Thomas Davis was left £1 1s by his father-in-law George Green, and £60 to the daughters to share.
Jane Davis Ann Davis Mary Davis Margaret Davis 1781 George Green George was left £5 by his grandmother Catherine in 1810 and then £60 by his father George Green in 1815 Elizabeth Davis Elizabeth, Thomas Hopley's granddaughter of Church Shocklach was left £10. 1804 - 1870 Samuel Hopley 66 66 In 1837, Samuel and James Hopley were occupiers of land at Church Shoicklach. This was his uncles! 1812 - 1891 Emma Hopley 79 79 1802 - 1837 Mary Hopley 35 35 11 Feb 1822, did Mary Hopley marry John Foster?  Probably not, as the 1851 census has John and Mary (61 & 55) with family, and their daughter Ellen born 1840 does not have MMN = HOPLEY (and the ages are a poor match). 1790 Elizabeth Hopley The other Elizabeth Hopley was left £10 by her grandmother, Catherine Hopley in 1810. 1797 Catherine Hopley Catherine Hopley was left £10 by her grandmother Catherine Hopley in 1810, but she is a minor.  There must be anolther!

2 Jan 1821, Catherine Hiopley of Shocklack married James Mangell
1759 - 1832 Esther Eastwood 73 73 Hames Hester in marriage, but should probably be Esther. 1798 Esther Hopley Catherine left £10 to each of the three sisters (Catherine, Elizabeth and Esther) when they reach the age of 21.

8 May 1828, Esther maried Frederick Samples (1796-1842) at Manchester. Frederick died 1842 and is in the same grave as Esther's parents in Salford.

In 1841, Esther and Frederick a roper, (both 40) were living on the Oldham Road, Manchester.
1794 Catherine Hopley Catherine left £10 to each of the three sisters (Catherine, Elizabeth and Esther) when they reach the age of 21. 1797 Elizabeth Hopley In 1810, Catherine left £10 to each of the three sisters (Catherine, Elizabeth and Esther) when they reach the age of 21.

6 Apr 1818, Elizabeth married Frederick Hampson, an Iron Moulder (tbc).  They do not appear to have had children.
1794 Thomas Hopley 1764 - 1847 Robert Hopley 83 83 Thomas (his father) left Robert (butcher) of Shocklach Oviat £50 in his Will of 1798, but most other children only 1s.

Robert's wife Margaret died in 1814 when Robert was about 50. They were living at Worthenbury.  He does not appear to have remarried.

James (brother) left him £120 when he died in 1842.

I cant find a Will for Robert Hopley, although most of his brothers seem to mave made one.
~1791 Jane Povah 1752 - 1832 Anne Morgan 80 80 1791 John Hopley 1789 - 1797 Sarah Hopley 8 8 1787 Elizabeth Hopley 1784 Ann Hopley 1785 Samuel Hopley 1778 - 1869 James Hopley 90 90 James Hopley (father-in-law, 84, born Overton) was living in Hampton, Malpas in 1861, so he had a daughter Margaret (b.1830) who had married William Barnes.

William and Margaret Barnes had a step-son George Hopley (aged 2, so born 1859).

Note correct age but Overton not Shocklach, so could be wrong person.
1780 - 1780 Ann Hopley 1779 - 1779 Frances Green 1732 Anne Davies 1764 Sarah Hopley Sarah marries a Roland, and moved to Manchester. 1759 Peter Hopley 1766 Thomas Hopley 1768 Margaret Hopley Margaret (spinster in 1805) was one of her father's two executors.

Margared may have altered the will to inherit the House and Smithy for herself for the rest of her life, and she had to make a sworn statement that the additional words were added by her father, and she witnessed the alteration. All very suspect !
1770 Anne Hopley 1772 Charles Hopley 1787 William Bradshaw This is the only birth recorded for Penley, so family may have only just moved here. 1781 Ann Bradshaw 1780 John Bradshaw 1784 Thomas Bradshaw 1805 - 1879 Rebecca Jones 74 74 Rebecca was of the Parish of Broxton

In 1841, Thomas (47) was an Ag. Labourer with wife Rebecca (37), Thomas (7), Elizabeth (12), Margaret (7), Randall (3) and Samuel (1).  They were at Carden (between Clutton, Broxton and Tilston).

In 1851, Thomas (55), Rebecca (42), Margaret (14), Randall (11), Samuel (9) and Mary (1) were at Barn Hill, Broxton.

In 1861, Rebecca was at Cuddington, aged 55, an Ag. Labourer's widow with daughter Mary (10) grandchildren George and Ann Hopley (aged 4 & 3) at Cuddington.

In 1871, Rebecca (64) was with her daughter Elizabeth (38, unmarried) and grandson George (14). Mary (24) was still with her, now married to George Williams (36) with their daughter Mary J (2).

Rebecca died in 1879
1768 - 1843 Jane Shone 75 75 Jane was on the 1841 census at Broxton with John and Elizabeth Hopley (both 43, born 1797), but Jane didn't have a son John!  There was also William Hopley (aged 11).

1802 Anne Hopley 1805 - 1826 Jane Hopley 20 20 1807 - 1809 Owen Hopley 2 2 1791 - 1814 Mary Hopley 22 22 Mary died at "Stretton, in the parish of Tilstone", so it can be assumed that this is where the family lived. 1800 Martha Hopley 1757 Ann Pritchard According to Marriage license, Ann's father is Daniel Pritchard.

Soon after Thomas and Ann were married, son William was born. That is why they married at the age of 19.
1776 - 1801 William Hopley 25 25 1784 Robert Hopley 1787 Daniel Hopley Daniel Hopley of the Werns, Worthenbury

Possibly married Elizabeth at Wybunbury,Cheshire and had Ellen, born 1812 (a potential DNA match).
1789 Peter Hopley 1792 Anne Hopley Ann was born at "The Wern", Coedpoeth, Wrexham.

If the DNA links are correct (dubious) Ann Hopley married John Jones in 1821 and in 1841, John and Anna Jones (55 & 50) were at Llangwyfan, Ruthin with their son John Jones (20).  However, it could easily be another DNA link, or no link at all.
1779 - 1785 Jane Hopley 5 5 1778 - 1780 John Hopley 1 1 1781 Thomas Hopley Thomas (widow in 1810) was left £10 by his grandmother Catherine.  This must be this older grandson Thomas Hopley son of Thomas (as the other Thomas grandsons are too young to have been married by then). 1783 James Hopley 1776 Hannah Green 1832 Thomas Hopley In 1841, Thomas (47) was an Ag. Labourer with wife Rebecca (37), Thomas (7), Elizabeth (12), Margaret (7), Randall (3) and Samuel (1).  They were at Carden (between Clutton, Broxton and Tilston).

Thomas had left home by 1851

In 1881, Thomas (52) was at Penly, Shropshire, married to Jane (59, a lunatic). They had his unmarried sister Elizabeth (54, Dairy Maid) living with them.
1828 Elizabeth Hopley In 1841, Thomas (47) was an Ag. Labourer with wife Rebecca (37), Thomas (7), Elizabeth (12), Margaret (7), Randall (3) and Samuel (1).  They were at Carden (between Clutton, Broxton and Tilston).

Elizabeth had left home by 1851, and probably had an illegitimate son George and daughter Annie.  She was 23, working as a kitchen maid for John Davies at farmer at Manor House, Hampton, Cheshire.

Elizabeth was the mother of George and possibly also Annie, born 1856-58. The father may have been one of the servants at Hampton where she was in 1851.

Elizabeth, 38, and unmarried was back with her mother in 1861, a Dairy Maid.

1835 Thomas Hopley Thomas, 21 appears on the Iowa, State Census, the only one from England on the page.  He apears to be a farm labourer andthough its not certain.  Is this him?  Age is correct and he's missing from England. 1810 Sarah Hughes 1839 John Hopley John aged 12 appears oin the 1851 census with his father John, a farm labourer from Shocklach and mother Sarah from Farndon.

By 1861 John is a Carter (servant), aged 22 for the Parker family (farmers of 120 acres) at Churton by Farndon.

1788 - 1856 Elizabeth Shone 68 68 9 Oct 1815 Elizabeth Shone married Richard Hopley.  However, the 1838 birth registration for Joseph shoes the MMN as WHITEACER (or maybe Whittaker).  Therefore, an 11y older Elizabeth may have been a widow when she married Richard.

In 1817, Charles Hopley of the Hound Dog Tavern, Manchester died, aged 44.
1770 John Hopley In 1770, when Mary was 18 may have had a bastard child baptised John Hopley by John Harris.  1748 Ann Daxon In 1753, the first bequest of William Hopley in his Will was: "I give and bequeath to Ann Daxon, Daughter of Edward and Mary Daxon, now of the Parkside Five Pounds ..." (i.e. his granddaughter Ann who would be about 11 years old when he died). ~1751 James Daxon In 1753, the second bequest of William Hopley in his Will was: "I give and bequeath to their son (of Edward and Mary Daxon, now of the Parkside) Five Pounds ...".  Therefore, Janes was born before 1753, and probably after Ann. ~1750 John Farnell In 1753, William Hopley in his Will itemed: "I give and bequeath to  John Farnell, Son of Frances and Elizabeth Farnell, now of Poolton Five Pounds". <1753 Mary Farnell In 1753, William Hopley in his Will itemed: "I give and bequeath to  Mary (daughter of Frances and Elizabeth Farnell, now of Poolton) Five Pounds". 1752 Mary Hopley Mary was born about 1752
