Charles was born in 1762 in Malpas and his baptism took place on October 27th, 1762 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1  Charles' father was Charles Hopley and his mother was Mary Maddock. He had five brothers and a sister, named John, Randle, Karel, Thomas, John and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Sarah.
