John was born in 1768 in Malpas and his baptism took place on July 20th, 1768 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1 2  John's father was Charles Hopley and his mother was Mary Maddock. He had five brothers and a sister, named John, Randle, Karel, Charles, Thomas and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Sarah.

‌John and Margaret were married in a religious ceremony on July 18th, 1794 at St. Oswalds (Malpas) by John Heaton.3  They had five sons and three daughters, named Charles, Joseph, James, Robert, William, Sarah, Mary and Anne.  There are no more children.
