John was born in 1768 in Malpas and his baptism took place on July 20th, 1768 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1 2  John's father was Charles Hopley and his mother was Mary Maddock. He had five brothers and a sister, named John, Randle, Karel, Charles, Thomas and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Sarah.
