Martha was born in 1800 in Overton and her baptism took place on October 12th, 1800 in Malpas.1 2  Martha's father was Thomas Hopley and her mother was Jane Shone.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Hopley and Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Richard, Owen, Mary, Anne and Jane.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
