Richard's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Jane Shone.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hopley and Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Owen, Mary, Martha, Anne and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 55 in December 1849 in Is-y-Coed.²
