Owen's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Jane Shone.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hopley and Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Thomas, Richard, Mary, Martha, Anne and Jane.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 2 in January 1809 in Cuddington.  He was buried on January 22nd, 1809 in Malpas.²
