Samuel was born in May 1862 in Farndon and his baptism took place on May 25th, 1862 at St. Chad (Farndon).1 2  Samuel's father was Charles Hopley and his mother was Mary Ann Barnes.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Hopley and Mary Saunders. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Mary.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Emma.  He died at the age of 72 in 1934.

‌Samuel and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony in 1895.  They had three sons and a daughter, named William, Charles, Samuel and Jessie.  There are possibly more children.
