Samuel was born in 1862 in Farndon and his baptism took place there on May 25th, 1862.1 2  Samuel's father was Charles Hopley and his mother was Mary Ann Barnes.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Hopley and Mary Saunders. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Mary.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Emma.  He died at the age of 72 in 1934.
