Charles was born in 1830 in Farndon.1   Charles' father was Samuel Hopley and his mother was Mary Saunders.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Poovah. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Emma and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother named John.  He died at the age of 78 in 1908 in Holt.2
