John was born in 1839 in Farndon.1 John's father was Samuel Hopley and his mother was Sarah Hughes. His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Poovah. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Charles, Thomas, Emma and Ann.General Notes
John aged 12 appears oin the 1851 census with his father John, a farm labourer from Shocklach and mother Sarah from Farndon.
By 1861 John is a Carter (servant), aged 22 for the Parker family (farmers of 120 acres) at Churton by Farndon.
