John was born in 1758 in Bickley and his baptism took place on November 4th, 1758 at St. Oswalds (Malpas). John's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson.  His maternal grandparents were Johannes Johnson and Cicely Rimmer. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Joseph, Mary and Elize.  He was the third oldest of the six children.



John's first family with Mary Capper

‌John and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on November 24th, 1777 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1 


John's second family with Ann Wooley

‌John and Ann were married in a religious ceremony on February 25th, 1782 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1  They had a son named George.
