Elize's father was Thomas Hopley and her mother was Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson.  Her maternal grandparents were Johannes Johnson and Cicely Rimmer. She had four brothers and a sister, named John, William, Thomas, Joseph and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
