John's father was Joseph Hopley and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Perry.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hopley and Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named George, George, Joseph, Mary, Hannah, Cecily, Cecily, Elizabeth, Anne, Mary and Martha.  He died at the age of 5 in June 1804 in Bickley.  He was buried on July 2nd, 1804 in Malpas.¹
