Joseph was born in August 1807 in Bickley and his baptism took place on August 16th, 1807 in Malpas.1  Joseph's father was Joseph Hopley and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Perry.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hopley and Cicely (Cecilla) Johnson. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named George, John, George, Mary, Hannah, Cecily, Cecily, Elizabeth, Anne, Mary and Martha.  He died at the age of 65 on May 11th, 1873 in Bickley.  He was buried on May 15th, 1873 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).2
