Robert's father was John Hopley and his mother was Margaret Reeves.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Maddock. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Joseph, James, William, Sarah, Mary and Anne.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in March 1805 in Malpas.  He was buried on March 6th, 1805 in Malpas.²
