Joseph's father was John Hopley and his mother was Margaret Reeves.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Maddock. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Charles, James, Robert, William, Sarah, Mary and Anne.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died in November 1798 in Malpas.  He was buried on November 30th, 1798 in Malpas.²
