James' father was John Hopley and his mother was Margaret Reeves.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Hopley and Mary Maddock. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Joseph, Robert, William, Sarah, Mary and Anne.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.

‌James and Ann were married.  They had a son and three daughters, named Charles, Francis, Ann and Margaret.  The family line is yet to be completed.
