Samuel was born in August 1765 in Shocklach and his christening took place there on September 8th, 1765.¹

Samuel's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Catherine Lewis. His paternal grandparents were William Hopley and Anne Williams. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Thomas, James, Robert, Peter, Charles, Anne, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the nineth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 78 in June 1844 in Shocklach. His burial was on June 18th, 1844 in Shocklach.¹

- Thomas's three sons William, James and Samuel probably worked together on the farm at Church Shochlach. Their father left them all his stock of cattle and horses and implements of husbandery and household goods.
  
  In 1837, Samuel and James Hopley were occupiers of land at Church Shoicklach.
  
  In his will of 1844 Samuel left everything to his wife Sarah.
