William was born in 1753 in Shocklach and his christening took place there on January 6th, 1754.¹

William's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Catherine Lewis. His paternal grandparents were William Hopley and Anne Williams. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, James, Robert, Samuel, Peter, Charles, Anne, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 87 in April 1840 in Shocklach. His burial was on April 7th, 1840 in Shocklach.²²

General Notes
- Thomas's three sons William, James and Samuel probably worked together on the farm at Church Shocklach. Their father left them all his stock of cattle and horses and implements of husbandry and household goods.
  
  William retired in 1821, selling his farming stock, implements, dairy and brewing vessels by auction (see image).
  
  Charles and William died about the same time and were buried 2 days apart at Shocklach. William had no will (on record).
