Mary was born in 1752 in Shocklach and her christening took place there on July 5th, 1752.1  Mary's father was Thomas Hopley and her mother was Catherine Lewis.  Her paternal grandparents were William Hopley and Anne Williams. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Thomas, James, Robert, Samuel, Peter, Charles, Anne and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
