John was born in October 1755 in Shocklach and his christening took place there on October 26th, 1755.1  John's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Catherine Lewis.  His paternal grandparents were William Hopley and Anne Williams. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Robert, Samuel, Peter, Charles, Anne, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 76 in February 1832 in Shocklach.  He was buried on February 11th, 1832 in Shocklach.2
