John was born in October 1755 in Shocklach and his christening took place there on October 26th, 1755.¹

John's father was Thomas Hopley and his mother was Catherine Lewis. His paternal grandparents were William Hopley and Anne Williams. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Robert, Samuel, Peter, Charles, Anne, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 76 in February 1832 in Shocklach. His burial was on February 11th, 1832 in Shocklach.²

  There was an outbreak of Cholera in 1832, and it is possible that John and Ann Hopley died of it, just three days appart. There were nepaper reports on 18 May 1832 (Chester Chronicle), but this is after they were dead and buried.

- John of Church Shocklach was left 1s by his father and later £10 by his mother Catherine.
