Alice was born in December 1871 in Whitchurch.¹

Alice's father was Thomas Bickley and her mother was Emma Hopley. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Hopley and Frances Ackerley. She had a brother and a sister, named William and Mary. She was the second oldest of the three children.
