Thomas' father was Richard Hopley and his mother was Elizabeth Shone. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hopley and Jane Shone. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Richard, George, Samuel, Joseph, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane and Martha. He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
