Joseph was born in May 1826 in Tattenhall and his baptism took place there on May 16th, 1826.1 2  Joseph's father was Ann Timmis and his mother was John Tushingham. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Job, Samuel, Thomas, Mary, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
