Thomas' father was Samuel Ankers and his mother was Jane Richards. His paternal grandparents were William Ankers and Mary Hopley; his maternal grandparents were James Richards and Mary Timmis. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Sarah. He was the youngest of the three children.
