Samuel was born in December 1839 in Tarvin.¹

Samuel's father was William Ankers and his mother was Mary Hopley. His maternal grandparents were Joseph Hopley and Elizabeth (Betty) Perry. He had six brothers and two sisters, named George, Joseph, John, Thomas, Emma, David, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 38 in 1877.
