In 1851, John, aged 25, was an Ag. Lab at Bridge Hill Farm, Heaton, working for Richard (29, Head) and Mary Hough. Betty Edge was their servant girl, just 15.

NOTE: There is another older John Mather from Tyldesley, son of Jeffery, who married Alice Knnton at Manchester in 1836.

Things happened, and John and Betty had to quickly get married on 19 June 1853.  Their daughter Catherine E Mather was born the same year.

In 1861 John and Betty Mather (35 & 25) with Catherine (8), Edward (6), Mary (3) and Elizabeth (8mo) at Rumworth (births registered at Little Hulton)

In 1879, John was a Forge Man when son Edward of Deane village married Elizabeth Howcroft.
1868 Mary Elizabeth Morris 1905 Fred Mather 1868 James Mather 24 Mar 1888, James Mather (20) of Atherton son of Edward married Mary Elizabeth Morris (20) of Westhoughton 1907 Norman Mather A baptism for Thomas was recorded in the parish records.  However the birth was registered as Norman.  Norman was 3 years old in 1911 (no Thomas). 1889 Clara Mather 1892 Elizabeth Mather 1895 James Edward Mather 1900 Herbert Mather 1801 - 1866 Henry Mather 65 65 Henry, son of William Mather married Margaret Holden in 1838.  Census records show Henry born about 1801 and the only Lancashire MATHER+HOLDEN marriage.

NOTE: This is the only other Mather marriage at Deane (as well as John Mather and Ellen Buckley) between 1837-1840, although several in 1841 and later.

1 Jan 1838, Henry married Margaret Holden at Deane. Margaret is described as a spinster, so Richard was an illegitimate son.  Her father was William Holden.

In 1841, Henry and Margaret Mather (41 & 35) are at Wingates, Westhoughton with son (or stepson) Richard Mather (13)

1851, Henry and Margaret (56 & 48) were at Wingates with Richard Holden (23, U, Son) and John Green (78, lodger, probably an uncle as Mother was Mary Green). There was no James.

1804 - 1871 Margaret Holden 66 66 Margaret's father was William Holden 1828 - 1901 Richard Holden 73 73 Richard married Betty

Richard Holden of 110 Chorley Road, Westhoughton, Lancashire died 10 Nov 1901
1781 - 1813 Samuel Mather 31 31 Samuel was baptised at Peel by Bolton, the son of William and Mary (Green).

The 1813 death record is for Samuel son of William Mather of Worsley, aged 31 years.  Had he gone back to his father?  Alice gave birth to Ellin in 1813 and then had an illegitimate child Alice in 1915.  It seems the marriage had broken down.
1785 Sarah Mather Sarah is the likely daughter of William Mather and Alice Aldercroft.  (There is no other matching William Mather and Alice marriage)

6 Oct 1803, another (older) Sarah Mather of Bolton Parish married John Peel
1778 Joseph Mather Joseph, son of William Mather of Tyldesley (near Atherton), baptised at St Stephen, Astley. 1775 Betty Mather Betty Mather, aged 23 married John Hulme in Eccles in 1798.

There is another Betty Mather (aged 20) marrying John March (aged 22) in Nov 1799.  This must be another, 4 years younger!
1752 - 1827 William Mather 74 74 William's mother may have been Betty.  There is a Betty Mather (1737-1821) buried at St Bartholomew (Westhoughton).

William Mather (weaver) and Alice Aldercroft, "both of Astley" were married 26 May 1774.  Betty and Joseph were both from Astley Village.

Siblings of William probabry include John, Ellis, Otho and Micall, all who had children baptised at St Stephen's, Astley between 1777 and 1836.
1762 - 1838 Mary Green 76 76 On daughter Ann's baptism, Mary Kay was given as the mother amd then "Kay" crossed out and shown as Mather. 1790 - 1842 Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather 52 52 1 Nov 1790, Baptised Geoffrey.

10 Dec 1816, "Jeffery" married Catherine Gregory at St Mary's, Deane.

In 1841, Jeffery was a "Col Wor" at Four Gates, Westhoughton with four daughters; twins Ellen and Alice (15), Ann (13), and Mary (8).
1788 - 1862 John Mather 74 74 John's first marriage was to Betty Woodward.  Brother Geoffery was witness.  Betty died in 1835 and was buried at Westhoughton (the only possible burial for a spouse of John).

John and Betty had four (or more) children.  First two were baptised at Westhoughton (1814-16), and then Mary and Betty at Winwick (1819-22).

In 1839, John (a widower) married Isaballe Harrington.  In 1841 John and Isabella were at Wingates, West Houghton.  John was a Shop Keeper. Neighbours where his brother Henry.

John's daughter Betty was an Inn keeper in Lord Street, Southworth with Croft. John (74) was with them in 1851

in 1861, they were at the Beer House (probably the Windmill where daughter Ann was in 1865) in Westhoughton.  John (72) was a beer seller.
1792 Ann Mather On the 28 Dec 1813, Isaac Turner married Ann Mather at St Mary's, Deane.

In 1824, Isaac Turner died, aged 36.

On the 21 May 1838, Ann Turner, daughter of William Mather a weaver married William Green.
1795 - 1806 Joseph Mather 11 11 1793 Isabella Harrington 1796 - 1834 Catherine Gregory 38 38 1825 - 1895 Jane (Ann) Smith 70 70 Anne when Catherine baptised and on 1851 census, but married Jane Smith in 1847, and Jane on all later records.

25 Apr 1847, Jane Smith, daughter of Thomas Smith a joiner, married Joseph Mather, son of Jeffery Mather a weaver at Deane St Mary Parish Church.
1852 Thomas Mather 1864 - 1918 Jeffrey Mather 54 54 Jeffrey or Geoffrey

In 1881, Jeffrey Mather (16) was a Colliery Labourer (like his fathr) at 20 Dicconson Lane, Bolton.

In Q3 1889, Geoffrey Mather, a Railway Engine Driver from  Westhoughton married Sarah Ann Wise at Westhoughton, St. John, Wingates.

In 1891, Geoffrey (26) was a Locomotive Fireman at Lower Darwen, married to Sarah Ann (26) and they had their first daughter Elizabeth (1)

Geoggrey died at Darwen in 1918
1821 Joseph Mather Joseph married Jane in April 1847 and yet when Catherine was baptised the parents were Joseph and Anne.  Joseph also recorded his wife Anne in 1851, with both daughters Catherine (4) and Alice (1) present.

It appears Anne and Jane are the same person, same age, silk weaver.  Probably the name have been mis-read as Jane and Anne appear very similar on these records.  All the childrens birth records show the mother's maiden name as SMITH.
1847 Catherine Mather 1849 - 1853 Alice Mather 3 3 1854 - <1892 Ann Mather 38 38 Another Ann was born in 1850 and then died (TBC). Then another Ann, noth daughters of William Mather and Margaret Smith born 1853.

In 1871, Ann was with her parents, aged 16.

In 1881, Lawrence and Ann Dobson (30 & 26) were at Aspull with their son Joseph (4)

Ann must have died as in 1892, Lawrence married Margaret Hart at Bolton RO.  Did Lawrence divorce Ann or was he a bigamist who married Margaret and emigrated to Canada?  There is no death for Ann before 1912.

In 1901, Lawrence and Margaret (50 & 34) were at Wingates, Westhoughton with Joseph (24), Mary Jane (15), William (15) and Alice (7)
1859 - 1861 Ellen Mather 2 2 1861 - 1865 Mary Jane Mather 3 3 1791 - 1835 Betty Woodward 44 44 John was probably married before he married Isalella late in life.  brother Jeffery married at Deane, so would expect the same for John. Also, Betty Mather was buried at Westhoughton in 1835, just before John remarried Oct 1839.  This all points towards the marriage of John and Betty Woodward. 1818 - 1818 Ellen Mather 1m 1m 1824 Ellen Mather 27 Mar 1843, Ellen, a minor, daughter of Geoffery Mather a husbandman married William Elliot, also a minor and a husbandman at St Mary's, Deane.  Although the marriage certificate registeres Ellen's name, it is signed (and indexed) as Ann 1824 - 1895 Alice Mather 71 71 In 1851, Alice (aged 27) was lodging with her brother William and Mary Mather (32 & 30) at Brimsup Hall, Westhoughton.  She had her daughter Catherine (6) with her.

1 June 1856 Alice Mather of Lostock, daughter of Geoffry Mather a weaver married Simon Ratcliffe a weaver of Lostock, son of Robert at St Peters, Bolton.

In 1871, Alice and Simon (47,53) and step-daughter Catherine (27) were Silk Wevers. Grandson and granddaughter Moses (7) and Mary (4) were also there.
1827 Ann Mather Ann married Richard Woodward 1833 - 1913 Mary Mather 80 80 In 1841, Mary (8), with her father (who died in 1842) at Four Gates, Westhoughton and was the youngest of four sisters.

In 1851, Mary (18) was still; at Four Gates, a maid servant for Richard Hope at the Four Gates Inn.

In 1861, Mary (28) was a House Servant at the White Horse Inn, Edgworth (next to Four Lane Ends) for James Ramwell, an Innkeeper and farmer of 20 acres.

11 Feb 1866, Mary Mather a servant, daughter of Jeffrey Mather a weaver married Samuel Berry a servant, son of John Berry a servant at St Peter's, Bolton.  Both were living in Turton.

in 1871, Samuel and Mary (both 37) were at Walkers Row, Edgworth with a son John Berry (1)

In 1881, Samuel and Mary (50 & 47) were at Turton Bottoms with son John (11)

In 1891, Mary (58, Wid) was with her son John (21) at 24 Bolton Road, Edgworth.  She was still there with her son (and family) in 1911
<unknown> 1844 - 1937 Catherine Mather 93 93 NOTE:  There are three Catherine Mathers born about this time.  This Catherine was the illegitimate daughter of Alice Mather.  The other two were daughters of William Mather & Margeret Smith (born 1845) and Joseph Mather & Jane Smith (born 1847).

Catheine never married

In 1861, Catherine was the step-daughter of Simon Ratcliffe, after he had married Alice Mather in 1857.

It seems that Catherine was the first to retire to Blackpool, with other family following soon after.
<unknown> 1817 - 1891 Simeon Ratcliffe 74 74 In 1891, Simon and Alice Radcliffe (74 & 66) were living at Heatons, Westhaughton with their daughter Catherine Single, 46).  Simon was blind. 1819 - >1891 William Mather 72 72 in 1841 William (21) and Edward Mather (10) were with William and Ann Gregory (farmer, both 60) at West Houghton.

In 1901, William and Elizabeth were living at 250 Chorley Road, Horwich with the first 7 of their 8 children, including Jane Platt Mather, confirming the correct marriage.

In 1911, William and Elizabebeth (55 & 49) were at 114 Chorley Road, Westhoughton with William (21), Mary Elizabeth (17), Jane Platt (13), Dora (11) and Eideth (7), and a nephew James Platt (1, born Addlington).  8 of their 9 children were still alive.
1858 Margaret Mather Margared married a Higham.  She and here mother were togethin at 592 Chorley Road, Westhaughton in 1911.  Brother Jeffery completed the 1911 census, although not on it. 1861 Jeffrey (Geoffrey) Mather 1858 Mary Ratcliffe Mary, daughter (aged 3) in 1861 1808 - 1830 Moses Mather 21 21 There was another Moses Mather born 1804, son of James and Alice of Middleton.

There are no marriage records for Moses before he died in 1830
1804 Margaret Mather Like her siblings, Margaret probably was born and died in Westhaughton.  However there is a mariage at Leigh to John Green which could be her if Margaret was born in Accrington. 1780 - 1824 Edward Mather 44 44 Edward and Ruth are (the only) two unaccounted burials at Westhoughton.  William is the only known possible father of Edward, but no Baptism to prove it.  However, there is for William and Alice, and it seems William was married before he married Mary Green, which may explain the big age gap between William and Mary.  Edward was the son of William and Alice of Westhoughton, baptised 1782

The 1841 census still has Ruth (60) and family, Farmer
1779 - 1846 Ruth Gregory 67 67 Ruth's parents were John and Margaret Gergory.

Ruth (60) was at Rogers Farm, Westhoughton in 1841 with various Mather family.
1822 - 1846 Edward Mather 23 23 Edward died young, just a few months after his mother, aged 23.  There is another Edward from Westhoughton born 1830 who survived. 1819 - 1866 Ruth Mather 47 47 1804 - 1878 Martha Mather 74 74 In 1841, Martha Mather (35), with her three children Allan, Betty and Ellen were living on Rogers Farm (Westhoughton) with her mother Ruth (60).

21 April 1863 daughter Betty Mather (29) of Westhoughton, daughter of Charles Pennington a farmer married Luke Southers, son of George, both farmers.  It is assumed that all the children Betty and earlier are Charles Penningtons.
1833 Betty Mather Betty did not marry, but had three children by 1861: Ellen (9), Ruth (7) and James (1).  She was living at School Hill, Wingate, Westhoughton, and neighbour to Henry and Margaret Mather (her great aunt and uncle).

21 April 1863 Betty Mather (29) of Westhoughton, daughter of Charles Pennington a farmer married Luke Southers, son of George, both farmers.

In 1871 Betty "Southern" (37, Wid) is a farmer of 44 acres at Westhoughton with Ellen (19), Ruth (16), James (11), Mary A (8), George (6) and g-daughter Edith (7 months)
1840 Ellen Turner 1829 Allan Mather ~1750 Alice Aldcroft William Mather (weaver) and Alice Aldercroft, "both of Astley" were married 26 May 1774 1813 James Dootson James Dootson, not Dobson (Doobson on marriage cert) 1816 William Turner 21 Apr 1840, William Turner (24), son of Isaac Turner married Martha Mather (26), dau of Edward at Wigan.  There were five  children born before 1840, and some were probably illegitimate.

In 1841, William Turner (25) was a weaver, living with Ruth Mather and her daughter Martha (35) at Roger's Farm, Westhoughton. Although recently married, he is listed after the Mather family and Martha is still a MATHER, not TURNER.

Mary was born 2 Jan 1807 at Newton-le-Willows, the daughter of Henry and Sarah and baptised at Newton Chapel.

18 Jul 1836, Mary Taylor married Thomas Mather at Winwick.  Thomason Mather died three years later in 1839, aged 24 (ASHT/1/248).

In Q1 1839, Son Jacob Mather was born (MMN = TAYLOR) and the birth registered at Newton-le-Willows.

In 1841, Jacob Taylor (2) was at Chapel Brow, Newton with Elizabeth Taylor (70) and Margaret Taylor (15). Mary Mather (35) was a Female Servant at Newton, Winwick.

Note: There were two other Mary Taylors of same age living in Ashton in Makerfield in 1841, one being Irish and her and in 1860 her son Jacob did marry Mary Ann Finnergan, an Irish girl.

In 1851, Mary Mather (43, Wid), born Newton-le-Willows was at Ashton in Makerfield with son Jacob (12), Sarah (8) and Elizabeth (3).

In 1861, Mary (59) was a charwoman at Dobbs Court, Ashton in Makerfield with daughter Sarah (18) and unmarried daughter Margaret Taylor (39). Also William Boon (40, a boarder)

In 1861, she is granddaughter Elizabeth Taylor (13) with sibling John (5), probably the illegitimate children of Margaret Taylor (39) living with their grandmother Mary Mather.
1863 John Mather 1867 Mary Ellen Mather 1870 Alice Mather 1870 John Wilson 1822 Margaret Taylor Margaret is probably a an illegitimate daughter of Mary Mather

In 1841, Jacob Taylor (2) was at Chapel Brow, Newton with Elizabeth Taylor (70) and Margaret Taylor (15).
<unknown> 1856 John Taylor <unknown> 1851 Lawrence Dobson Ann must have died as in 1892, Lawrence married Margaret Hart at Bolton RO.

In 1901, Lawrence and Margaret (50 & 34) were at Wingates, Westhoughton with Joseph (24), Mary Jane (15), William (15) and Alice (7)
1877 Joseph Dobson 1880 - 1881 Wilfred Dobson 6m 6m 1882 Mary Jane Dobson 1867 Margaret Hart 1894 Alice Dobson 1816 William Turner 21 Apr 1840, William Turner (24), son of Isaac Turner married Martha Mather (26), dau of Edward at Wigan.

In 1861, William and Martha (44 & 57) are farmers with son Isaac (19, unmarried) at Rogers Farm
1818 George Hulme 11 Nov 1839, George Hulme, a labourer of Hopes, Little Lever, son of John Hulme a farmer married Ruth Mather of Breightmet, illegitimate.

1820 - 1872 Ruth Mather 52 52 Ruth was illegitimate, father not sown of marriage.  She was probably from Breightment and lived at Little Lever after 1939.

Ruth may be the daughter of MaryAnn Mather of Breightment.

It is Ruth who is believed to have had a son William Mather in 1839, just before she married George Hulme, although George Hulme had a daughter Eliza the same year.
1839 George Mather George may have died young.  He was assumed to be the daughter of Ruth, but that cant be the case as Eliza was illegitimate and born 1839 (unless Eliza and George are not siblings, but from each parent). 1839 Eliza Hulme 1785 Alice Mather Alice did not marry James Topping (as that Alice was a widow), so this is possibly my Alice Mather that married Samuel Mather in 1810. However, the 1851 census shows my Alice was from Turton. 1864 Richard Nuttall 14 Sep 1889, Richard Nuttall (26) married Elizabeth Mather (31, Wid), daughter of Daniel Amos (Dec).

In 1891, Richard and Elizabeth (27 & 32) were at Little Lever with step-son Charles (7) and Ernest (11mo).

1858 Elizabeth Amos Although daughter of Daniel Amos, Elizabeth recorded her maiden name as MATHER for the childrens births. 1890 Ernest Nuttall 1893 Amos Nuttall 1896 Harry Nuttall 1899 Alice Nuttall 1901 Harold Nuttall 1883 Charles Mather (Nuttall) Charles was thre son of Joseph Mather and Elizabeth Amos of Church Street, Radcliffe.

Charles was a step-son of Richard.
1840 - 1884 Joseph Mather 44 44 Joseph son of James a Manufacturer from Church Street, Radcliffe.

Between Joseph Mather's marriage in 1883 and Elizabeths re-marriage in 1889, Joseph died.  He could be the Joseph that died at Ardwich in 1888, aged 33.  However, the older Joseph that died in 1884 at Horwich, aged 45 is more likely.  Joseph was from Church Street, Radcliffe and this is also the abode when their only child Charles was baptised. We need his marriace certificate to confirm.
1882 Alice Mather In 1904, Alice Mather married James Bowling at Westhoughton, St John, Wingates 1884 James Edward Mather 1887 Margaret Ellen Mather Margaret married in 1908, but by 1911, no children, living in East Oldham.

James Mason ~1775 James Boardman ~1775 Catharine Mather The may be the Kathryne Mather of Little Hulton, born 1765 and daughter of Thomas Mather.

In 1796, Cathrine Mather married James Boardman, a soldier.

In 1812, Catherine Boardman married James Bootle, also a soldier.

1858 - 1894 Joseph Hilton 36 36 In 1861, Joseph (3) was at Westhoughton, the son of Isaac a coal miner and Alice Hilton.

In 1871, Joseph (13) was already a Coal Minter at Bk Hilltop (?), Westhoughton, living with his parents Isaac and Alice (56 & 51)

"Joseph J Hilton" died 1894.  The extra J is probably an error as there is no UK birth for a Joseph J Hilton around 1858.
1856 - 1935 Alice Mather 79 79 In 1861 Alice (4) was in Westhoughton with parents James and Jane and aged 14 in 1871, born Westhoughton.

In Q2 1877, Alice Mather married Joseph Hilton at Bolton (need a copy of Marriage Cert to confirm correct Alice) but seems very likely as first two children named after her closest surviving siblings..

In 1881, Alice Hilton (23) was described as the daughter of Alice Hilton (60, head), with her first two sons Jeffrey (3) and Joseph (7mo).  Birth records confirm the mother's maiden name was Mather.  Joseph was absent.

The family emigrated to Iowa, USA before Reuben was born in 1886.

In 1871, Moses was 7, living with his grandparents Simon and Alice Radcliffe (53 & 47).

In 1881, Moses Radcliffe (18), Son (probably of Catherine Radcliffe, unmarried, 36) was a Coal Miner at 1 Lee Fold, Westhoughton. Simon and Alice Radcliffe (63 & 57) were head of household.

In 1891, Moses, a Coal Miner, and Ann (27 & 26) were at 43 Manchester Road, Westhoughton with James, Mary E and Joseph (4, 2 & 2mo)

Moses became an indurance agent in later life.  He and wife Ann both died in Blackpool.

Moses names one of his sons William Adamson Mather, so confirming this civil marriage to Ann Adamson in 1885 (when he was 22).

Moses is buried at Westhoughton in the same grave as Zilpha

Granddaughter of Daniel and Sarah Armitage and James and Elizabeth (Betsy) Banks (nee GERMAN or LAWTON).

Thought to ne nicknamed Ethel, but Nellie has a close sister Ethel, so this is very unlikely.
