James was born on March 17th, 1844 in Lowton and his baptism took place on March 31st, 1844 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Martha Swift. He had four brothers and six sisters, named William, Thomas, Joseph, Peter, Mary, Ellen, Alice, Elizabeth, Alice and Margaret.  He died at the age of 17 in December 1861 in Barton upon Irwell.2
