Ellen was born on August 10th, 1846 in Lowton and her baptism took place on August 16th, 1846 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1 2  Ellen's father was James Mather and her mother was Martha Swift. She had five brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Joseph, Peter, Mary, Alice, Elizabeth, Alice and Margaret.
