Joseph was born on June 16th, 1849 in Lowton and his baptism took place on June 24th, 1849 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1 2  Joseph's father was James Mather and his mother was Martha Swift. He had four brothers and six sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Peter, Mary, Ellen, Alice, Elizabeth, Alice and Margaret.  Alice and Joseph were twins.
