Alice was born on June 16th, 1849 in Lowton and her baptism took place on June 24th, 1849 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.1 2  Alice's father was James Mather and her mother was Martha Swift. She had five brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Joseph, Peter, Mary, Ellen, Elizabeth, Alice and Margaret.  Alice and Joseph were twins.  She died at the age of 3 in December 1852.
