Sarah was born in 1894 in Little Bolton.1  Sarah's father was William Mather and her mother was Ann McGurn.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Stirrup. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, James, Albert, Austin, Gilbert, Aldred, Elizabeth, Mary and Ellen.  She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
