Ellen's father was William Mather and her mother was Ann McGurn.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Stirrup. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, James, Albert, Austin, Gilbert, Aldred, Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah.  She was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.
