Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Ann McGurn.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Stirrup. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, James, Albert, Austin, Gilbert, Aldred, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ellen.  She was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
