William's father was William Mather and his mother was Ann McGurn.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Stirrup. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, James, Albert, Austin, Gilbert, Aldred, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.
