James' father was William Mather and his mother was Ann McGurn.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Stirrup. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Joseph, Albert, Austin, Gilbert, Aldred, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
