Elizabeth was born in 1888 in Little Bolton.1  Elizabeth's father was William Mather and her mother was Ann McGurn.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Stirrup. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Joseph, James, Albert, Austin, Gilbert, Aldred, Mary, Sarah and Ellen.  She was the third oldest of the twelve children.
