Adam was born on October 21st, 1845 in Newton in Makerfield and his baptism took place on December 7th, 1845 in Newton le Willows.1 2  Adam's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Margaret Smith. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, George, Edward, Mary and Ann.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died after 1901.
