Adam's father was Arthur Mather and his mother was Jane Smith. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas, William and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Joseph.  He died due to a medical problem, Scarlet Feaver, at the age of 12 in October 1858 in Warrington.  He was buried on October 12th, 1858 in Ashton-in-Makerfield.^2 3
