John was born in September 1844 in Warrington and his baptism took place there on December 25th, 1844.1 2  John's father was Arthur Mather and his mother was Jane Smith. He had three brothers and a sister, named Adam, Thomas, William and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Joseph.
